Below are some common signs in people with HMPV virus disease, according to the American Lung Association.

Sore throat

A sore throat is one of the first signs of HMPV infection. An infected person may experience discomfort or pain when swallowing, and a red or swollen throat.

Fever

Fever is another sign of HMPV. The body raises its temperature to fight off the viral infection.

Stuffy nose, runny nose

The inflammation caused by the virus causes the nasal passages to swell, blocking airflow and making it difficult to breathe through the nose. Additionally, the virus causes an overproduction of mucus, leading to a persistent runny nose.

Cough

A persistent cough is common in people infected with HMPV. This is the body's way of trying to clear the airways of mucus and irritants caused by the virus.

Sneeze

Sneezing is a natural reflex in response to irritation in the nasal passages and can cause a runny nose or sore throat.

Rash

About 5-10% of children infected with HMPV may develop a rash, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics in Review.

Nausea and vomiting

Other uncommon signs of HMPV include nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Shortness of breath

This is one of the more serious signs of HMPV. The virus can affect the lower respiratory tract, leading to difficulty breathing.

Pneumonia, bronchiolitis or bronchitis

In most cases, the symptoms of HMPV are mild and will clear up within a week or two. However, severe cases can lead to complications, especially in vulnerable people.
