Menstrual cramps only last for a few days but cause a lot of discomfort for women. Below is how to use mint to relieve menstrual cramps.

Peppermint and its use in relieving menstrual cramps

According to a study published in the Iranian Journal of Medical and Midwifery Research, using peppermint extract does not affect menstrual blood flow and may help reduce pain during menstruation.

Another study published in the journal Molecules said that peppermint contains menthol - a muscle relaxant that helps soothe uterine contractions and significantly reduces menstrual cramps.

Menthol found in peppermint also acts as a natural pain reliever, when applied topically or taken as a tea, this herb can help relieve pain associated with menstruation.

Peppermint helps increase blood circulation, helping the muscles in the uterus relax and reduce the intensity of contractions.

How to use mint to relieve menstrual cramps

Peppermint tea:

A hot cup of tea, especially peppermint tea, can be very effective in relieving pain. To relieve menstrual cramps, steep fresh peppermint leaves or tea bags in hot water for about 5-10 minutes. During menstruation, drink this tea twice a day to help relax the muscles and reduce the contractions that cause menstrual cramps.

Peppermint essential oil:

Dilute peppermint essential oil with a carrier oil (coconut oil or olive oil) and gently massage it onto the lower abdomen - where contractions often occur - to help reduce menstrual cramps. Combining peppermint essential oil for a full body massage also helps improve blood circulation, quickly reducing abdominal pain.

Warm compress with mint:

Soaking a cloth in warm peppermint tea or mixing a few drops of peppermint essential oil in warm water and applying it to your abdomen for 15-20 minutes can help relax your muscles and relieve menstrual cramps. You can also add a few drops of this essential oil to warm bath water and soak in it to relax.
