Uses of onions in treating constipation
According to a study published in the Iranian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences, onions are a natural remedy for constipation, as they are rich in fiber and beneficial compounds that support colon health. The fiber in onions helps absorb water, forming a gel inside the intestines that softens stools and helps eliminate waste easily.
Onions are rich in prebiotics, which help to increase beneficial bacteria in the gut. When the gut flora is nourished, they aid in digestion and facilitate the elimination of waste. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds found in onions soothe the digestive tract and improve overall gut health.
How to use onions to prevent constipation
- Eating raw onions, especially red onions, helps stimulate bowel movements. The fiber and sulfur compounds in raw onions bulk up stools and promote digestion. Try adding sliced raw onions to salads, sandwiches, or yogurt.
- Cooking onions makes food softer, more flavorful, and easier to eat. Onions are often added to a variety of dishes such as soups, stews, stir-fries, and omelets.
- To maximize the effects of onions, you can try onion juice. You just need to puree or squeeze a few onions and filter the juice, drink directly or dilute with water to enhance the flavor.
