Notably, in the past month, the hospital has been receiving many cases of severe dengue fever, up to now, 127 cases have been recorded, while in the same period last year, there were only 64 cases.
According to the reporter at the Dengue Fever Department, on November 6, there were 4 cases of serious illness, admitted to the hospital in a state of shock. Doctors, nurses and parents are constantly on duty to care for and treat the child.
Mr. Duong Buu Toan (from Ca Mau), father of Duong Long Nhat (4 years old) discovered that his child had a fever 5 days ago. The family took the child to a local medical facility for examination. At first, the child had a low fever but then it recurred, and he was even more tired. After a blood test, the child was diagnosed with dengue fever.
Knowing that the epidemic is broke out and are always vigilant, the family does not think that their children are sick. When we learned that the child was sick, we rushed to take him to the hospital at the end of the line in the hope of timely treatment. Currently, the child has a blood infection, we are very worried but at the same time continue to be on duty to take care of the child, following the doctor's instructions to overcome this stage" - Mr. Toan shared.
This parent also said that compared to the usual fever, dengue fever makes his child dry and unable to eat, often accompanied by sleepiness and fatigue. Therefore, Mr. Toan advised other parents not to be subjective.
Talking to Lao Dong, Dr. Nguyen Huynh Nhat Truong - Head of the hospital's Dengue Fever Department - said that compared to the beginning of August, the dengue fever situation is much more intense, with the number of cases increasing significantly, and the severity of the disease increasing dramatically.
"The rate of children with severe illness occurs from 6, 9, 16 years old, in a state of shock with liver damage. Through the recording of the above cases, doctors recommend that parents pay attention to manifestations such as fever, lethargy, abdominal pain, vomiting in children to recognize the possibility of dengue fever. With those signs, parents should not hesitate but immediately take their children to the nearest medical facility for testing and treatment" - Dr. Truong said.
Doctor Truong added that currently, medical staff at the Dengue Fever Department are on duty continuously, taking blood every hour, and testing each young case at any time.
According to the Center for Disease Control of Can Tho City, in the first months of 2025, the city recorded an average of 40 cases of dengue fever per month. However, in June, the number of cases increased to nearly 100 cases. Since July, this number has increased sharply, reaching nearly 200 cases per month. Dengue fever epidemics are now entering a complex stage, with water retention habits and a prolonged rainy season creating an ideal environment for outbreaks.
