Dengue fever is an infectious disease caused by the Dengue virus, transmitted from sick people to healthy people through mosquito bites.

The disease can cause serious complications such as mucosal hemorrhage, visceral hemorrhage, multiple organ damage, and dengue shock. Nutritional care is an important supportive measure for most dengue patients, both in the acute and recovery stages. Below are some nutritional guidelines, including foods to supplement and some foods to avoid, to help patients recover quickly.

1. Provide enough water and electrolytes

Loss of fluids due to fever, sweating, vomiting in dengue and increased vascular permeability, leads to dehydration and can worsen the condition. Adequate fluid and electrolyte replacement is necessary to maintain the body's water and electrolyte balance, maintain good organ function and facilitate the elimination of toxins. ORS, coconut water and other electrolyte drinks are especially recommended as they provide hydration along with electrolytes, help alleviate symptoms and aid in the healing process.

2. Micronutrient-rich diet

Helps boost the body's immune system and provides the body with the fuel it needs for recovery. Fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in vitamin C (such as citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers) and vitamin K (such as green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale), can promote recovery and indirectly support platelet function.

3. Provide protein

Poultry, fish, eggs, and beans are great choices. These protein-rich foods provide amino acids that help repair cells, especially those in the immune system and blood cells.

4. Omega-3 rich fatty acids

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish (like salmon, mackerel, and sardines) and flaxseeds, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help the body recover.

5. Foods rich in iron

Lean meat, poultry, beans, lentils, and spinach are notable sources of iron. Adequate iron intake aids in the transport of oxygen throughout the body and helps boost immunity.

6. Avoid processed foods

These foods often lack essential nutrients your body needs while sick and can even worsen inflammation.

7. Papaya

Papaya stands out as a beneficial addition to the dengue recovery diet. It is rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that boosts the immune system and aids in wound healing. Additionally, the fiber content in papaya supports digestive health, helping to prevent constipation and ensure regular bowel movements.

8. Some foods should be limited

Foods or drinks containing caffeine; Spicy, hot foods; Foods high in fat.
