Dark chocolate and milk chocolate, which is healthier

Dark chocolate is appreciated for its cocoa and antioxidant content, but milk chocolate is still attractive for its sweetness, so which one is really beneficial?

Outstanding dark chocolate thanks to nutrients and antioxidants

Nutritionally, both dark chocolate and milk chocolate contain significant calories and fat. However, dark chocolate has a higher cocoa content, less sugar and is rich in flavonoids, a group of antioxidants that support the heart, improve blood flow and regulate blood sugar levels.

Black chocolate is a healthier choice because it is rich in polyphenols and essential minerals like iron, copper and zinc, says nutritionist Amy Brownstein, an expert at verywell Health, USA. These are important for metabolism and heart health."

Compared to dark chocolate, milk chocolate is often processed more, containing more sugar and powdered milk, resulting in lower antioxidant content. Over 100g, dark chocolate has about 8g of fiber, 6mg of iron and four times more caffeine than milk chocolate, helping to bring stimulation and concentration.

In addition, the compound theobromine in cocoa, more abundant in dark chocolate, is also said to be beneficial for cognitive function, bringing a feeling of alertness but gentler than caffeine.

Benefits and risks of eating chocolate

Many studies have shown that moderate consumption of dark chocolate can reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and improve insulin sensitivity. It also helps reduce inflammation and supports brain function.

Dr Michael R. Skotnicki, a nutritionist at the University of Birmingham, UK, emphasizes: People who eat dark chocolate rich in flavonoids often have a healthier cardiovascular system. However, the benefits are only apparent when consumed in moderation, around 2030g per day".

However, chocolate is not completely harmless. Both dark chocolate and milk chocolate are high in calories and saturated fat. Eating too much can easily lead to weight gain and cardiovascular problems. Notably, recent studies have found that some dark chocolatees contain heavy metals such as cadmium and lead that are higher than expected. However, this risk is only worrying when consuming large quantities over a long period of time.

When choosing to buy, experts recommend prioritizing chocolate bars with cocoa content of 70% or more, less added sugar and few artificial ingredients. Organic chocolate is not always safer, because sometimes it contains more heavy metals than conventional products.

Dark chocolate is a better choice for health thanks to its rich antioxidant and mineral content. However, it is important to eat in moderation and combine it with a balanced diet. Milk chocolate can still be an attractive dessert, but if you want to get health benefits, dark chocolate is the priority choice.
