Tampons are a type of stick-shaped sanitary napkin used by many women, so should you use tampons while sleeping?

Is it safe to use tampons overnight?

According to Dr. Nupur Gupta, Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram (India), using tampons overnight is safe if not used for more than 8 hours.

However, you should not use super absorbent sanitary napkins because they will create a favorable environment for bacteria to grow.

The risks of using tampons overnight for too long

Toxic shock syndrome: Leaving a tampon in the vagina for a long time can promote bacterial growth and increase the risk of fatal toxic shock syndrome. This occurs when bacteria come into contact with blood.

Vaginal abrasions: Leaving a tampon inside the vagina for too long can stick to the vaginal walls and cause abrasions, especially during removal.

Vaginitis: Bacterial growth due to leaving sanitary napkins in the vagina for too long can cause a number of conditions such as vaginal infections, vaginal itching and burning.

Notes when using tampons

According to experts, women should limit the use of super absorbent tampons. Especially for young women who have never had sex, they need to be careful and learn carefully before deciding to use tampons, because if not used properly, it can cause damage or tear the hymen.

If you detect any unusual signs such as clumping cotton, many folds in the bandage after use, or an unpleasant odor after 1-2 hours of use, stop using immediately and check the origin of the product.

Opened tampon packages can be contaminated with bacteria, so they should be stored in a clean, dry place. Avoid storing tampons in the bathroom to prevent the risk of bacterial, damp and mold contamination.

If the tampon becomes wet or appears flaky or otherwise abnormal, do not continue to use it.

You should change tampons every 3-4 hours to avoid infection. Do not use tampons when sleeping overnight. Avoid using tampons with chemical scents, as they can cause itching and gynecological infections.

Pay special attention when using tampons and detect signs of reaction such as itching, burning, redness, you should stop using immediately, clean thoroughly and see a doctor immediately.
