Dr. Nguyen Trong Duc - Faculty of Tooth, Military Central Hospital 108 said that Digital Nervous V (also known as Bi Neurgery) is one of the largest and most important skull nerves, taking over the sensory and movement function for some chewing muscles. When this nerve is damaged or stimulated abnormally, the patient may experience intense pain, suddenly that it seems unable to stand it.
Digital nerve pain V is an acute pain that appears in areas where this nerve dominates - including forehead, cheeks, upper jaw and lower jaw. The pain usually occurs on one side, with a sharp nature, such as an electric shock or a knife, which lasts for a few seconds to a few minutes and can be repeated in batches.
Painful (idiopathic): accounting for more than 90% of cases. The pain occurred for unknown reasons, usually starting suddenly and very intense. Some people may feel mild pain in the face, jaw or teeth before - easily causing the disease to be confused with dental diseases.
Secondary pain: less common, usually due to specific causes such as cerebellum tumors, cysts, blood vessel deformities or complications after surgery of the surface jaw. This case requires determination of the cause of the background through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neurological examination.
The manifestations of nerve pain V are very special but also easily confused. Patients often go through:
Sudden, severe pain, like electric shock or knife, with burning sensation.
Pain usually starts by normal activities such as speaking, chewing, washing your face, brushing teeth or in contact with cold winds.
The pain may be short but continuously recur, causing patients to limit their facial movements and difficult to eat.
If not treated promptly, the pain may last longer, become dull and seriously affect the quality of life.
"Because the V nerves dominate the sensation in the face and jaw, the symptoms of pain are often confused with dental diseases such as pulpitis, gingivitis, sinusitis or even pain due to VII (face) nerve damage. This makes it difficult to diagnose and can lead to wrong treatment," Dr. Nguyen Trong Duc added.
Although not common, digital nerve pain V is a pathology that greatly affects daily activities and is easily missed or misdiagnosed. Therefore, when there are severe facial pain, recurrence, especially pain such as electric shock, patients need to visit medical facilities with specialized neuropathic facilities for accurate diagnosis and timely treatment.
