HCMC - A 27-year-old woman accidentally swallowed a whole pill, after which she felt pain, difficulty swallowing, and severe heartburn.

Patient N.T.N.H.(born in 1998, residing in Lap Vo district, Dong Thap province) came to Le Van Viet Hospital with pain, difficulty swallowing, discomfort and heartburn.Through medical history, the patient said that he had accidentally swallowed the entire medicine shell when taking medicine.

When performing an ultrasound, the doctor discovered a foreign object in the esophagus, so he ordered the patient to undergo an endoscopy.

The endoscopy results showed that a 4-edged zinc-coated foreign object measuring 1.7cm x 1.7cm was found in the upper 1/3 mucosa, deeply embedded in the esophageal wall.After removing the foreign object, the patient's pain was significantly reduced and he felt more comfortable, no longer feeling stuck in his throat.

Doctor Nguyen Van Nha - Le Van Viet Hospital said that handling foreign objects with sharp edges requires the use of specialized equipment to avoid causing further damage to the esophagus.

Doctors recommend that both adults and children should always be careful when taking medicine and eating food.You should check and read the instructions carefully, when taking medicine, you should not laugh or scream to avoid swallowing unopened pills.

In case of suspected foreign objects in the esophagus, you should go to a medical facility immediately for examination and timely treatment.Absolutely do not use your hands or any object to hook or poke into the throat, which can cause dangerous edema of the hypopharynx.

If not treated promptly, these foreign objects can cause inflammation, abscesses, bleeding, even esophageal perforation, deep infections that can threaten the patient's life.
