On June 8, news from Khanh Hoa General Hospital said that doctors had just successfully performed emergency surgery to save an 84-year-old man with a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm in critical condition.
According to the hospital, the patient residing in Bac Nha Trang ward, was previously found to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a chest aortic aneurysm.
Although he was indicated for proactive surgery a year ago, due to his old age, the patient did not perform intervention.
On June 3, the patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe abdominal pain, severe shock, pulse and blood pressure could not be measured.
Ultrasound and MSCT results determined a large ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, causing massive bleeding into the retroperitoneal cavity.
Doctors said that abdominal aortic rupture has a 100% mortality rate if not operated on. Even when put on the operating table in time, the risk of death is still at 85-90%.
During the surgery, as soon as the abdomen was opened, the patient had cardiac arrest due to excessive blood loss. The anesthesia resuscitation and surgical team had to coordinate urgently to maintain circulation, and quickly find the ruptured site to pinch and stop the bleeding...
Difficulties continue to appear when the patient's vascular wall is severely calcified due to age.
Surgeons had to replace the ruptured artery segment with artificial blood vessels and reinforce it with biological glue, while ensuring that it did not affect the blood vessels feeding the intestines and spinal cord.
After 4 hours of surgery, the bleeding was completely stopped, and the circulation of both lower limbs recovered well. A few days after surgery, the patient was awake, ate normally and continued to be monitored for recovery.
From the above case, doctors recommend that people, especially people over 60 years old with underlying diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or atherosclerosis, need to have regular health check-ups to detect early aortic aneurysm and treat it promptly before dangerous complications occur.
