The Delta version of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused panic among people around the world as soon as it was discovered in India. This variety has a rapid spread rate and creates new breakthroughs, including Delta Plus, making global health experts worried.
India has called Delta Plus a " worrisome variety" because it is more contagious than Delta. Currently, Delta Plus has been detected in many countries such as the US, India, Canada, Japan, Nepal, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, Türkiye, etc.
How is Delta Plus different?
Each variety has certain changes. For example, Delta variants have a group of breakthroughs that cause them to be transmitted from person to person quickly. Because Delta is an outstanding variety in circulation, when it infects new people, it will continue to make breakthroughs.
Delta Plus is caused by Delta variants. It shares almost the same genetic code as the original Delta variety, but there are some differences. Delta Plus has a supplementary variant called K417N, which affects the thorn protein - part of the virus that attaches to the cells it infects.
Dr Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease expert and senior fellow at the Center for Health Security at Johns Hoplins University, said Delta Plus does not seem to be operating as much as Delta: "Dela Plus variations have not had any major impact on how the virus works."
Is Delta Plus more dangerous than Delta variation?
When a new variety appears, scientists closely monitor it to see how it works differently and whether it will start to take over.
Any beneficial variety meaning that if it is more contagious and can avoid the vaccine could start to dominate, as the Delta variety initially did.
During the 6-week study, Dr. F. Perry Wilson, Yale Medicine Physician and researcher at Yale Medical School, said that Delta Plus cases "not really took over at all. In the past 6 weeks, they have been quite stable".
However, more information is needed to better understand whether Delta Plus has different activities.
Does Delta Plus affect the vaccine?
Whenever a new variety appears, the big question arises whether it can get vaccinated.
The real concern is whether variants can avoid vaccine-generated immunity and there is no real evidence that Delta Plus can do so better than Delta, says Dr. Wilson.
The COVID-19 vaccine helps prevent disease from getting worse, hospitalizations and death. They also create immunity through T and B cells - known to be long-term effective in preventing complications of serious diseases, even with variants.
Therefore, it is difficult for a variation to make the vaccine useless.
So far, there is no evidence that Delta Plus causes more concerns than the original Delta variation. However, scientists still need more information to determine how the subtypes of the different active variants are.
