The Central Eye Hospital received patient N.V.H, 39 years old, from Bac Ninh, admitted to the hospital after being hit hard in the left eye by a Pickleball while competing.
According to doctors, the patient suffered from eyeball contusion, vestibular bleeding and glass discharge, mild corneal edema, severely impaired vision, and could only see palm shadows at very close range.
Dr. Tham Truong Khanh Van - Head of the Department of Trauma, Central Eye Hospital - said that after a period of internal medicine treatment, the patient's vision improved, but the glaucoma increased and could not be controlled with drugs. Doctors were forced to perform surgery to lower the glaucoma to treat complications from the injury. The patient still needs to continue to be monitored and treated for a long time.
The patient said he had only played Pickleball for about 3 months because he thought this was a light, less dangerous sport. However, in a shot, his teammate hit the ball hard, causing the ball to deviate and fly straight into his left eye, causing severe pain and blurred vision immediately.
Previously, the Central Eye Hospital also received a more severe case, Mr. N.V.C, 35 years old, in Hanoi. The patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of eyeball rupture, corneal and corneal tears, intraocular tissue extruding and completely losing the ability to recognize morning and night.
Due to severe damage that could not be restored, doctors were forced to perform surgery to remove the eyeball. The patient was permanently blind in her left eye.
According to ophthalmologists, recently the number of eye injuries related to Pickleball has tended to increase. The main causes are ball movement at high speed, close competition distance, incomplete reflexes or racket collisions between players.
