After more than 10 days of receiving a kidney transplant from a woman who unfortunately died in a traffic accident, the health of two young patients at Gia Dinh People's Hospital has stabilized. They not only overcome the dangerous stage after surgery but can also walk, eat and live normally.
Those two lucky patients, Mr. D.C.P (born in 1993) and Ms. N.T.H.L (born in 1989), both have end-stage kidney disease and are required to have dialysis 3 times a week. Their life journey seemed to be at a standstill until they received news of a suitable source of kidneys from the brain-dead organ donor of Ms. N.V.B.T (HCMC), who unfortunately died after a serious motorbike accident on June 29, 2025.
Immediately after being determined to be brain dead after three consultations, Ms. T.'s family decided to donate organs, a humane decision that helped save many lives. Her heart was successfully transplanted at Hue Central Hospital, and two kidneys were used to transplant to Mr. P. and Ms. L. at Gia Dinh People's Hospital.
Mr. P. used to be a salesman, but had to quit his job due to a long period of dialysis. His mother became an unwavering companion in the battle to save her son's life. I used to not dare to believe that I could have a normal life, Mr. P. said emotionally after waking up from the transplant. The person who connected Mr. P. to this chance to live was a patient who had successfully received a kidney transplant at the same hospital.
As for Ms. L., the journey was more difficult. As a single mother, caring for her 7-year-old son and 67-year-old mother, she has been working as a pharmaceutical pharmacist and has been practicing dialysis for the past four years. The day she received a call from the hospital informing her that there was a suitable kidney source, she could only keep quiet. After the transplant, when she woke up in the post-operative room, she burst into tears because she knew she had been saved again - this time, to continue to be a mother, a child, and a support for her family.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Toan - Head of the Department of Nephrology and Urology, Gia Dinh People's Hospital said that both patients recovered well: the serum creatinine index returned to near normal levels, the function of renal filtering improved significantly, urine was excretionated stably (6,0007,000 ml/day), the surgical wound was healthy, the patient ate well and switched to taking oral anti-inflammatory drugs. They are eligible for discharge in the next few days and will continue to be monitored periodically at a specialist clinic.
Dr. Mai Phan Tuong Anh - Deputy Director of Gia Dinh People's Hospital said that the two successful kidney transplants were the result of professional coordination between medical units, especially the participation of professional support from doctors from Cho Ray Hospital. This is also a testament to the potential for developing organ transplants at the hospital, with the upcoming goal of performing liver transplants.
In the first 6 months of 2025 alone, Gia Dinh People's Hospital has successfully performed 4 kidney transplants from brain-dead donors, an encouraging number in the context of the limited source of organs donated from brain-dead donors in Vietnam.
