When should I worry about a rapid heart rate?
Dr Mukesh Goel, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital (India) – said that tachycardia is characterized by the presence of extra heart sounds.
An abnormally rapid heart rate can be a cause for health concern, especially in older adults.
For young people, an occasional increase in heart rate is considered normal and does not necessarily warrant immediate medical attention, explains Dr. Mukesh Goel.
However, a “galloping rhythm” that occurs in older adults will often indicate an underlying heart problem, including heart failure.
Some symptoms to watch out for
In addition to a rapid heart rate, Dr. Goel shares other symptoms to watch out for when it comes to heart health:
Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity
Unexplained fatigue or weakness
Swelling in the legs or ankles
Fast or irregular heartbeat
Dizziness or lightheadedness
In severe cases, a galloping rhythm can indicate an unhealthy heart that is unable to meet the body’s needs. This can lead to complications such as fluid buildup in the lungs, increasing the risk of sudden cardiac events.
If you experience a rapid heartbeat or any related symptoms, Dr. Goel emphasizes the importance of consulting a doctor. A combination of factors including medication, lifestyle changes, a balanced diet, and physical activity will support heart health.
