Dr. Nguyen Quang Bay - Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes Department, Bach Mai Hospital - shared: The thyroid gland is located in front of the neck, playing the role of producing thyroxin hormone (T4) and Tri -iodothyronin (T3), regulating the function of many agencies. In people with Basedow, the thyroid gland is overcurrent, leading to hyperthyroidism. The common manifestations include: fatigue, fast heartbeat, tremor, weight loss, muscle weakness, digestive disorders, a lot of sweating, insomnia, irritability and goiter. In some cases, there is a convex condition.
The cause of Basedow disease is mainly due to genetic factors and immune disorders, when the body produces an antibodies to Trab that attack TSH receptors in the thyroid gland, causing this gland to operate uncontrollably. The disease is non-communicable and often occurs in young or middle-aged women, especially when they are under prolonged stress or have a viral infection.
According to Dr. Nguyen Quang Bay, internal medicine treatment with anti-thyroidism drugs is the most effective and popular method today. Patients take medicine for 18-24 months, hormone levels will return to normal after 4-12 weeks. The treatment process needs to be closely monitored and re-examined periodically to adjust the dose. Arbitrarily quitting medication can easily cause complications of hypothyroidism or dangerous acute thyroid poisoning.
Some mild side effects may occur such as itching and rashes. If fever or sore throat appears, patients need to stop taking the medicine and see a doctor immediately. Internal medicine treatment helps 50-60% of patients recover from the disease, however, about 40-50% can recur. At that time, surgery or radioactive iodine is an alternative option.
Women with Basedow can still be pregnant but need to control their thyroid hormones first. Patients should also avoid foods rich in iodine such as seafood, seaweed and absolutely do not smoke.
Dr.BS. Nguyen Quang Bay emphasized that Basedow can be completely controlled if the patient follows the correct treatment regimen, has a full check-up and maintains a healthy lifestyle. Timely treatment will help minimize dangerous complications and protect long-term health.
