Here are some causes of irregular periods after pregnancy, shared by gynecologist Sandhya Rani at Aster Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Bengaluru.
Hormonal imbalance
The body experiences huge hormonal changes during pregnancy, especially fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone. After giving birth, it can take time for hormones to stabilize, causing irregular periods.
The effects of milk secretion and prolactin
Usually, breastfeeding is the cause of menstrual abnormalities. When mothers breastfeed, prolactin levels are high, inhibiting the secretion of reproductive hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This inhibit can cause slow ovulation or even complete loss of menstruation during breastfeeding.
Physical and mental stress
Postpartum stress causes physical and mental stress for the mother. Lack of sleep, adapting to a new schedule and the body's recovery process after giving birth can all cause stress, affecting ovulation and the menstrual cycle.
Uterine restoration and postpartum healing
After giving birth, the uterus needs time to return to normal, thereby slowing or disrupting the menstrual cycle. In some cases, conditions such as remaining placental tissue or postpartum infections can also affect the menstrual cycle.
Weight and nutritional deficiencies
Pregnancy and childbirth exhaust the body's nutrient reserves, when combined with anorexia, which can affect the menstrual cycle. Lack of iron, calcium, vitamin D and other important nutrients can affect hormonal balance and ovulation, leading to irregular periods after pregnancy.
Other underlying medical conditions
Some medical conditions can also be the cause of irregular menstruation after pregnancy. These conditions develop or become more severe after pregnancy, causing irregular periods. Medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid conditions (hyperthyroidism or hyperthyroidism) and diabetes all affect the menstrual cycle.
