In recent days, Hanoi and many localities have continuously recorded high temperatures. Prolonged hot weather not only causes fatigue and discomfort but also poses many risks to health. At the Department of Nephrology, Urology and Hemodialysis, E Hospital, doctors have just received a case of acute kidney damage and streptomyalysis after many hours of working outdoors in hot sun.
The patient is a 25-year-old young man, from Son La, working as a general laborer in the construction sector in Hanoi. Due to the nature of his work, he usually works outdoors for about 11 hours a day.

After a day of hard work, he returned in a state of exhaustion, thirst, body aches, especially in his hands and feet. The symptoms quickly became more serious when his limbs stiffened, severe pain and fatigue, and his body became exhausted, making him unable to function normally. Worried about the risk of affecting his health, especially kidney function, colleagues took him to E Hospital for emergency treatment.
MSc.BS Nguyen Van Lap - Department of Nephrology and Urology and Hemodialysis, E Hospital said that upon admission, the patient showed signs of severe fatigue, pain and stiffness of the whole body, thirst, oliguria, abnormal dark urine. Through examination and testing, doctors determined that the patient had acute kidney damage due to dehydration and streptomyalysis related to prolonged labor in hot weather conditions.
When the body is active at high intensity in a high-temperature environment, the amount of water and electrolytes lost through sweat is very large. If not supplemented in time, the body will fall into a state of dehydration and electrolyte disorders. Along with that, overexertion can damage muscle cells, causing streptomyalysis. Products from the muscle destruction process are released into the blood, causing the kidneys to overload to excrete, thereby increasing the risk of acute kidney damage," the doctor analyzed.
Doctors recommend that people, especially outdoor workers, should arrange reasonable working hours, limit continuous work during hot sunny hours, rest fully and supplement water regularly. For heavy laborers or those who sweat a lot, it is necessary to pay attention to appropriate electrolyte compensation.
When symptoms such as prolonged fatigue, severe muscle aches, cramps, continuous thirst, dark urine or reduced urine volume appear, people need to go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment, avoiding affecting health and kidney function.
