retina herniation, also known as retina herniation, is a condition in which the retina layer is separated from the underlying tissue layer, which provides oxygen and nutrients to the eyes.
According to the Cleveland Clinic Hospital (USA), if not detected and treated promptly, retina peeling can lead to serious vision loss, even blindness. Common causes include age, eye injuries, and genetic factors.
However, a less noticeable risk is the habit of lifting heavy objects, especially for people with severe myopia.
Dr. Sanskriti Ukey (a practicing ophthalmologist in India) said that she has recorded many cases of patients with hyperopia who have peeling retina after ignoring the recommendation of not lifting heavy objects.
According to Dr. Ukey, severe myopia means the eyeball is longer than normal. This causes the retina to stretch, becoming thin and vulnerable.
"The laryngoscopic laryngosome in people with severe myopia are already fragile. Just a strong impact or sudden pressure can cause tears or peeling, Ms. Sanskriti Ukey emphasized.
When lifting heavy objects, many people have the habit of holding their breath and holding their muscles for strength. This action increases the sudden pressure in the chest, head and eyes.
For people with weak retina, this pressure can directly affect the eye structure, increasing the risk of serious damage.
That strong and sudden pressure can cause a complete tear or peeling of the retina. This is a medical emergency that often requires immediate surgical intervention, warned Dr. Ukey.
According to her, even when treated, retina peeling can still leave long-term consequences, seriously affecting central vision.
From clinical practice, Dr. Ukey recommends that people with severe myopia should minimize lifting heavy objects.
It is completely unreasonable to take a risk on your vision to lift a heavy object, said Ms. Ukey.
According to this doctor's suggestion, people with near-weight should only lift objects weighing less than 4.5 kg (about 10 pounds).
To protect your eyes, your doctor recommends prioritizing safety measures such as using a wheelchair, asking someone else to assist or dividing heavy objects when moving. In cases where lifting is required, breathe evenly, avoid holding your breath and carrying yourself too much.
"Deletion is an invaluable asset. Don't trade eye health for habits or external forms, Dr. Ukey emphasizes, encouraging people with severe myopia to have regular eye check-ups to detect potential risks early.
