The 2025 Asia Power Index - published by the Sydney-based Institute of Lawyers in Australia in November - assesses the resources and capabilities of countries in influencing the behavior of countries and other non-state entities, as well as affecting the outcomes of international issues.
Below are the top 7 countries.
1. US: 80.4
With a score of 80.4, the US tops the Asia Power Index, thanks to its great military influence, a network of alliances with Japan, South Korea, Australia and the Philippines, and outstanding financial and technological influence. The US is also a key factor in trade, artificial intelligence and the semiconductor supply chain.
2. China: 73.7
China reached 73.7 points, reflecting its huge economic power, the world's leading manufacturing sector and rapid expansion of naval and air force power.

3. India: 40.0
The score of 40.0 makes India the third most powerful country in Asia and the only country in the "culture" category. Strong economic growth, large population, expanding petroleum fleets and a central role in the Four Ministries and Indian Ocean Security have enhanced India's influence, even as infrastructure shortages and internal inequality remain limitations.
4. Japan: 38.8
Japan scored 38.8 points, ranking fourth in the group of high-capacity mid-range powers. The country combines advanced technology, large aid budgets and a key role in the global supply chain, along with the Defence Forces being expanded under new security strategies.
5. Russia: 32.1
Russia's score of 32.1 reflects its military power, energy exports and arms trade to Asia. However, the conflict in Ukraine, Western sanctions and economic isolation are eroding Moscow's overall influence, forcing Russia to strengthen its ties with China, Iran and some partners in Southeast Asia.
6. Australia: 31.8
Australia has 31.8 points, ranking sixth. The country's influence comes from a developed economy rich in resources, highly capable military forces and extensive alliances with the US, UK (AUKUS) and regional partners. Canberra also promoted diplomacy in the Pacific region and Southeast Asia.
7. Korea: 31.5
With 31.5 points, South Korea demonstrates its strength from advanced technology industries, large economies and modern armed forces facing directly the threat from North Korea.
South Korea promotes its soft power through popular culture such as K-pop and TV dramas, while adjusting complex relations with the US, China and Japan, in parallel with investing heavily in defense and leading the semiconductor industry.
The Asia Power Index is published annually to assess the resources and impact of 27 countries based on what they own and how they use those resources. The assessment ranges from Pakistan in the west, Russia in the north, to Australia, New Zealand and the US in the Pacific region.
