Rainy season comes, dengue fever spreads silently

Vietnam during the peak dengue fever season (May-November), the Ministry of Health warned that it is necessary to prevent the epidemic from spreading early.

The Ministry of Health said that for dengue fever, in the first 4 months of the year, the southern region recorded 15,795 cases, an increase of more than 62% over the same period. In particular, in 4 provinces and cities in the South, more than 67% of the total number of cases in the whole region.

Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City has 6,624 cases, Dong Nai 2,151 cases, Binh Duong 1,250 cases, Ba Ria - Vung Tau 542 cases. Since the beginning of the year, the number of deaths from dengue fever has been recorded at 4 cases in the whole area, an increase of 1 case compared to the same period.

In the northern provinces, the rainy season is the time when there is a risk of increasing dengue fever. Dengue fever is an acute infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted through mosquitoes. The disease progresses rapidly and is at risk of becoming an epidemic. If not detected and treated promptly, the patient can become more serious and lead to death.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Do Duy Cuong - Director of the Center for Tropical Diseases, Bach Mai Hospital, dengue fever is an infectious disease caused by the Dengue virus. Typical characteristics of dengue fever are fever, bleeding and huyetosal drainage, which can lead to shock absorption of circulating volume, blood clotting disorder, and organ failure. If not diagnosed early and treated promptly, the disease can easily lead to death.

virus Dengue has 4 types: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4. The virus is transmitted from sick people to healthy people through mosquito bites. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are the main disease-carrying intermediate insect. The disease occurs in both children and adults, occurring all year round, and often increases during the rainy season.

Doctor Cuong warns that dengue fever often goes through three stages: fever, danger and recovery. In particular, the dangerous stage (3rd - 7th days of the disease) can cause serious complications such as bleeding, huyetosal drainage, liver failure, kidney failure. About 5% of patients are seriously ill, and if not treated promptly, they can die.

Many people are subjective, thinking that dengue fever is normal, the fever will go away for a few days, so stay at home, only when they see dengue, go to the hospital. In fact, many cases of fever without symptoms of bleeding still have blood clotting leading to shock; at this time, treatment is very difficult, even death. When there is a fever, it is necessary to go to a medical facility for blood testing, diagnosis, and monitoring of treatment by a specialist, not self-treatment at home.

When suspecting or having dengue fever, patients need to seek medical help, rest and drink plenty of water. paracetamol can be taken to reduce fever and relieve pain. Absolutely do not take Aspirin or Ibuprofen because these two drugs can increase the risk of bleeding - Associate Professor, Dr. Do Duy Cuong emphasized.

Faced with the risk of an outbreak, the Ministry of Health has requested localities to strengthen supervision, handle outbreaks, organize disease control campaigns, communicate disease prevention, mobilize students and people to participate in cleaning up the living environment. At the same time, organize in response to ASEAN Diabetes Day on June 15, 2025.

The doctor recommends that the most effective way to prevent dengue fever is still to kill mosquitoes and ticks, avoid leaving water stagnant around the house, use sleeping mates, spraying and absolutely do not be subjective with unusual fever manifestations.
