On April 9, Dr. Pham Quoc Khanh - Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Le Van Thinh Hospital (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) said that doctors had just operated on patient M.H (41 years old, Dong Nai province) after being bitten by a pitbull.
After the surgery, the family asked to transfer Ms. H to Cho Ray Hospital for further intensive treatment.
Initial information shows that at the time of the incident, Ms. H was taking the cow to graze around her living area. Ms. H asked the homeowner for permission to let the cows in the yard to graze.
However, as soon as the cow was brought into the yard, 3 dogs of this family suddenly rushed out and barged fiercely. Among them, a pitbull dog suddenly attacked Ms. H.
The woman tried to endure and cried for help for 30 minutes until a member of the homeowner's family discovered the incident. This person quickly controlled the dog and took Ms. H to the hospital for emergency care. The injury was so serious that the patient was transferred to Le Van Thinh Hospital for emergency treatment.
At the hospital, the condition of the patient is considered to be very serious despite being awake. The wounds on the victim were very serious, including the cheeks bitten with 7x3 cm large wounds, the left ear was completely lost, the right hand was torn with many large and small wounds, the left forearm with many tooth traces. The wound caused significant blood loss to the victim.
Realizing that the patient's multiple injuries were too serious, the doctors urgently performed emergency surgery that lasted 5 hours. During the surgery, Ms. H was given 3 units of settled red blood cells and 4 units of frozen fresh huyet tuong.
After surgery, the patient's condition was more stable, but due to the seriousness of the wound, it still took a long time to recover. The patient was vaccinated against tetanus, rabies virus vaccination, anti-rabies serum, while maintaining anticoagulants and respiratory support.
Doctor Khanh recommends that dog owners should fully vaccinate their pets, keep them carefully and always muzzle when taking their dogs out. In particular, families with young children should limit raising rabid dogs.
When bitten or scratched by a dog, people need to go to the hospital immediately for timely examination and rabies vaccination to avoid unfortunate consequences.
