According to the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, more than 90% of women experience significant and complex skin changes that can greatly impact their lives during pregnancy.
These changes are largely the result of a combination of hormonal, immune, metabolic, and vascular changes that occur during pregnancy, which affect the skin in a variety of ways.
Stretch marks
According to Dr Ruby Sachdev, Consultant, Cosmetic Surgeon, Gleneagles Hospital, Bengaluru (India), stretch marks are one of the most common skin problems for pregnant women. These usually appear as pink, red or purple streaks on areas that are prone to rapid stretching, such as the abdomen, breasts, hips and thighs. Over time, they tend to fade to a silvery white colour, but they may never disappear completely.
Acne
Pregnancy acne occurs due to increased androgen levels, which stimulate oil glands, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Even women who previously had clear skin can experience acne breakouts during pregnancy.
Melasma
“Melasma, also known as the ‘mask of pregnancy,’ is characterized by dark, patchy patches on the face, especially around the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip,” says Dr. Sachdev. “This hyperpigmentation is primarily caused by hormonal changes but can be aggravated by sun exposure.”
Skin tags
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause small, benign skin growths, called skin tags, to develop in areas of skin that are frequently exposed to friction, such as the neck, armpits, and under the breasts.
Conclude
“While many skin changes during pregnancy are temporary, it’s important to manage them carefully,” adds Dr. Sachdev. “Use safe skin care products, avoid over-the-counter treatments, and always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new treatments.”
