On March 16, Tan Ky Medical Center (Nghe An province) said that the unit had just received and treated a rare case when pubic lice parasitized in the eye area.
The patient is Ms. N.T. H (born 1972) who came for examination in a state of itchy eyes, droopy eyes, swollen red eyelids and prolonged tearing for many days.
Through examination and microscopic eye vision, Dr. Phan Thanh Hai - Ophthalmology Department discovered that under the scales on the eyelid margin there are many parasites densely attached to the eyelashes. Notably, their eggs are attached in chains along the patient's eyelashes.
Immediately after that, doctors proceeded to clean the eyelid area, carefully removing all parasites and eggs attached to the eyelashes. The patient was also prescribed medication for treatment, personal hygiene instructions and scheduled a follow-up appointment for monitoring.
According to Dr. Hai, pubic lice are blood-sucking parasites, often living in pubic hair or genitals. However, in some rare cases, they may appear in other hair areas on the body such as eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits or beard.
When parasitic on the body, pubic lice cause a feeling of itching and discomfort. If they appear in the eye area, patients may experience symptoms such as drooping eyes, watery eyes, blepharitis and easily lead to infection if not detected and treated promptly.
Doctors recommend that when symptoms such as itching, prolonged eye strain, abnormal tearing or itching in the hair areas of the body appear, people should go to a medical facility for early examination to avoid the risk of infection and complications.
