Patient N. (41 years old, Korean nationality) was admitted to the hospital in an unconscious state. Through a quick clinical examination, the patient had low blood pressure, cerebral hemorrhage, deep coma, cerebral edema causing part of the brain to be displaced to the left, severe pneumonia and septic shock. According to the emergency team's estimate, the patient had suffered a stroke for more than 48 hours before being discovered.
Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Head of the Department of Neurosurgery and Endovascular Neurointervention, FV Hospital said that to increase the patient's chances of survival, in addition to the continuous resuscitation by the ICU doctor, a quick consultation took place and the decision was made to open the patient's skull to remove the hematoma and place a drain.
The surgery lasted about 3 hours to release the hematoma in the skull, however the patient is still in a deep coma, the recovery is difficult to predict, and depends a lot on the post-operative care process.
The hospitalized patient had no relatives in Vietnam. Through the process of searching for information, the patient's family members came to Vietnam to take care of their child.
"Faced with my child being in a deep coma, I had almost no hope left and suggested stopping treatment," the patient's father shared.
In a vegetative state, the patient's health went through many ups and downs, constantly having fevers due to many severe life-threatening infections. Many specialists were mobilized to actively treat the patient.
And the miracle happened, after 80 days of hospitalization, patient N. woke up with significant signs of neurological recovery: conscious, understood English and could raise his right hand and make a fist, although his movements were still weak due to paralysis on the left side of his body due to the sequelae of brain damage.
Doctor Nguyen Manh Hung - FV Hospital said: "I believe that the patient's intelligence will recover, however, motor function will be difficult and will take a long time."
Currently, the hospital has contacted the Korean Consulate to bring their citizens back to their country, continue to receive care, recover and stabilize their new life in their homeland.
