Recently, social networks have spread the trend of using tamarind seeds to treat arthritis, along with many affirmations about the " miraculous" uses.
However, experts say that people need to be alert, avoid absolutely trusting unverified information.
According to nutritionist Kanika Malhotra (India) of indianexpress, tamarind seeds are rich in protein, fiber, carbohydrates, and many essential minerals such as magnesium and potassium.
Tamarind also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties, and can be processed by roasting, grinding, or adding to smoothies, soups, and sauces. This nutritional component helps support digestion, lower cholesterol and improve overall health.
Dr. Vishal Shinde, Orthopedic surgeon at Wockhardt Hospital (Mumbai Central), said that natural treatments such as tamarind seeds " have potential" but need more research.
He emphasized that tamarind is rich in vitamin C, which is good for the body's recovery process, but there is not enough strong evidence to prove its ability to directly treat arthritis.
In addition, doctors recommend not to rely solely on online information to replace proven medical treatments, such as hip replacement surgery or knee surgery for severe cases.
Dr. Mohit Kukreja, an internist and Sports Medicine specialist ( Wockhardt Hospital), warned that tamarind seeds can interact with some drugs, especially blood thinners such as warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding.
In addition, some people may experience allergies, leading to serious reactions such as anaphylactic shock. Taking high doses of tamarind seeds can also cause digestive disorders, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
Archana, a nutritionist at Aster Hospital (Bengaluru), noted that tamarind seeds contain serotonin, which can be toxic to people taking depression medication. Therefore, the addition of tamarind seeds should be done slowly, starting with small amounts to monitor tolerance.
Experts agree that there is currently not enough evidence to confirm that tamarind seeds can cure arthritis.
However, using fresh tamarind in a reasonable diet still brings nutritional benefits and less risks than processed products that are high in sodium.
Most importantly, any health support methods need to be discussed with doctors to ensure safety and effectiveness.
