With the desire to improve his health and fitness, a 31-year-old young man (Hanoi) maintained the habit of exercising at the gym for 1-2 hours each day after work. However, high-intensity training for a long time, without a suitable lesson plan, caused him to be hospitalized for emergency treatment.
Sharing with the doctor, the patient said: "Daily work already consumes a lot of energy. After work, I continue to practice strengthening exercises for the arm, shoulder and chest muscle groups with a weight of 5-10kg. Initially, I only felt more muscle pain than usual after each workout, so I thought it was a natural reaction of the body when exercising vigorously and continued to maintain the exercise schedule. However, after a short time, both arms began to swell, turn red, and hurt intensely. Simple activities such as changing clothes, lifting objects or moving hands also became difficult. Worried about my health, my family took me to the hospital for emergency treatment.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoa, Department of Nephrology and Urology and Hemodialysis, E Hospital, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe pain and fatigue in the muscles of both arms, swelling, redness, burning, and nausea. Through clinical examination and necessary tests, doctors determined that the patient had streptomyalgia syndrome due to overexertion.
According to Dr. Hoa, myasthenia gravis is a condition in which muscle cells are damaged and destroyed, releasing substances inside muscle cells into the blood. The disease can be caused by many causes such as trauma, drug use, infection, or overexertion. In this case, prolonged high-intensity exercise without reasonable rest time has overloaded muscle groups and led to injury.
Fortunately, the patient was detected and treated at an early stage. When admitted to the hospital, the patient did not have kidney damage or other serious complications. After intensive treatment, the clinical condition improved significantly, and the test indicators gradually returned to normal," said Dr. Hoa.
In fact, in recent years, sports such as gym, pickleball, jogging, cycling or endurance sports are increasingly chosen by many people to improve their health. However, many people practice according to trends or set goals to gain muscle and lose weight in a short time, so it is easy to exercise too much or the wrong method.
Doctors recommend that when signs such as prolonged severe muscle pain, abnormal swelling, muscle weakness, difficulty moving, severe fatigue, nausea or dark urine like thick tea appear, people should stop exercising and go to a medical facility for early examination.
