Combination helps stay alert without restlessness
The new "biological hacking" trend on social networks recently is to add 200mg of L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, to coffee every morning. Many people believe that this combination helps them focus better, have a clear mind without the nervousness caused by caffeine. Experts say that this assessment is scientifically supported.
L-theanine promotes a calm alert state, helps increase alertness and reduce anxiety without causing sleep, says Dr Luke barr, neurologist and medical director at SensIQ (USA).
According to Mr. barr, when combined with caffeine, an active ingredient that helps block adenosine (brain sleepiness), L-theanine helps maintain stable concentration and avoids the "energy overload" that many people experience after drinking heavy coffee.
Scientifically supported formula
Studies show that combining 200mg of L-theanine with 160mg of caffeine, equivalent to a cup of deep coffee, helps improve accuracy, reaction time and long-term attention span compared to just caffeine.
Dr. Oscar Coetzee, Senior Director of Clinical Education at Designs for Health (USA), explains: L-theanine increases brain wave activity associated with relaxation alertness, while affecting dopamine and serotonin, helping to balance mood and reduce stress interruption.
According to him, the combination of these two active ingredients gives users a state called "calm concentration", where they are still alert and alert to caffeine without trembling or heart palpitations.
Notes when using
This combination is safe for healthy adults if used in moderation. However, people who are sensitive to caffeine or have low blood pressure should be cautious.
If you are taking medications related to serotonin, dopamine or blood pressure, you should consult your doctor before taking a supplement, recommends Dr. barr.
Coetzee suggests starting with a low dose, around 100mg of L-theanine and 100mg of caffeine, to test tolerance.
For those who seek alertness and concentration without coffee, a little L-theanine in a morning cup of coffee may be a worth trying.
