Some studies have shown that promoting a Mediterranean diet as a healthy eating model can help prevent weight gain and the development of overweight/obesity.
Bread consumption, which is part of traditional Mediterranean diets, has continued to decline in Spain and worldwide, because public opinion argues that bread causes obesity.
Current research is conducted to assess whether eating patterns including bread are associated with obesity and excess belly fat, both in the general population and in those undergoing obesity treatment.
The results of this study showed that reducing consumption of white bread, but not whole wheat bread, in the context of a Mediterranean diet was associated with weight gain and lower belly fat reduction.
It seems that the different ingredients between whole wheat bread and white bread have different effects on body weight and belly fat. However, the term "whole wheat bread" needs to be defined more clearly for use in epidemiological studies.
Finally, supplementary studies using traditional bread production methods should analyze this impact on body weight and regulate metabolism.
