Excessive alcohol consumption can cause oxidative stress and nerve cell damage, which can lead to cognitive decline and dementia, so limiting alcohol is important to reduce your risk of dementia, says Los Angeles-based nutritionist Maggie Moon.
Alcohol affects brain function, says Cal State Long Beach nutrition professor Dustin Moore. Because alcohol is a biochemical toxin, its consumption causes tissue damage, inhibits normal body functions, promotes cellular dysfunction, and disrupts brain neurotransmitters, leading to the development of dementia.
Drinking too much alcohol can cause gut dysbiosis, leading to brain inflammation, adds nutrition professor Dustin Moore.
Nutritionists recommend limiting your alcohol intake to reduce your risk of dementia. If you are over 21 and enjoy an occasional alcoholic beverage, drink in moderation, which is no more than one drink a day for women or two drinks a day for men.
