According to a new study from the Lundquist Institute (formerly known as LA BioMed) and the University of Rochester, using electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, can cause lung damage after just three days of use.
This emphasizes that any form of new generation tobacco use is not safe for the lungs.
Bronchiolitis obliterans
The diacetyl component in e-cigarette liquid can cause inflammation and permanent scarring in the smallest branches of the airways, leading to difficulty breathing. The main symptoms of the disease are dry cough and shortness of breath, which usually appear about 2 weeks to 2 months after exposure to the toxic chemical.
Lipid Pneumonia
Flavoring agents and volatile vitamins in e-cigarettes can deposit in the lungs, causing inflammation and destroying the alveoli. These microscopic oil particles stimulate the immune system and cause an inflammatory response in the lungs, leading to Lipid Pneumonitis.
Symptoms include persistent cough, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases, coughing up blood.
