HCMC records 2 more deaths from rabies

THÀNH AN |

HCMC - Nghia Thanh and Xuan Son communes recorded 2 more deaths from rabies.

On August 23, the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Center for Disease Control (under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health) said that it had just recorded 2 more deaths from rabies in Nghia Thanh and Xuan Son communes.

The case in Nghia Thanh commune is Ms. V.T.N (born in 1978). Around August 10, this patient showed symptoms of fatigue, fever, muscle pain and went to a clinic for examination. A day later, seeing serious changes, he was transferred to Ba Ria Hospital and was diagnosed with suspected rabies, and the patient died on August 12. The results of the epidemiological investigation did not record any abnormalities in livestock around the house within a radius of 1km.

The case recorded in Xuan Son commune is patient N.D.N (born in 1974). About 4-5 months ago, this patient was bitten by a dog but did not get vaccinated. Around August 7, he had typical symptoms of rabies such as: fear of wind, fear of light, difficulty swallowing... Although he was actively treated at Hospital 115 in Ho Chi Minh City, the patient died on August 12.

The health sector has recommended that relatives in close contact with the two patients need to be vaccinated against rabies; as well as additional vaccination for domestic and neighboring dogs and cats that have not been vaccinated; request households to manage and chain their pets to avoid freeing them.

According to the Center for Disease Control of Ba Ria - Vung Tau, many deaths have been recorded in recent times, due to subjective lack of appropriate vaccination after being bitten by dogs and cats.

Therefore, the health sector recommends that people should pay attention to: when injured by a dog or cat, they should be washed with soap under water running continuously for about 15 minutes, then disinfected with alcohol or antibacterial solution, do not cover the wound and absolutely do not self-treat.

After completing first aid, they had to go to a medical facility to get vaccinated against rabies and anti-rabies serum as prescribed by medical staff within 24 hours. Delay or subjective non-vaccation can be the main cause of unfortunate consequences.
