Artichokes and liver uses
According to research from the Center for Nutrition and Metabolism of the University of California, Los Angeles, artichokes are rich in antioxidants such as cynarin and silymarin, which help stimulate bile production, support fat digestion and are beneficial for liver function. Some small clinical studies have also found that artichokes can help improve liver enzymes in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
However, it is very important to understand the role of artichokes properly, Dr. Laura Williams, a nutritionist and toxicologist at King's College London (UK), warned: " artichokes are not a miracle for the liver. Excessive consumption or use as a concentrated extract can put pressure on the liver and gallbladder, especially in people with a history of gallstones or chronic hepatitis."
Risk of counterproductive effects
In Vietnam, many people have the habit of drinking artichoke tea every day, even constantly replacing it with filtered water. Others even cook fresh artichokes in large doses because they think that "the more you drink, the better the detoxification". This is a common mistake that leads to impaired bile secretion, prolonged diarrhea, and in more serious cases, impaired liver function.
Gan does not need to detoxify every day, what it needs is moderation, less alcohol, less bad fats and good sleep. The rush to supplement herbs such as artichokes can force the liver to process more unnecessary active ingredients, thereby creating a adverse reaction," Dr. Laura Williams further analyzed.
How to use artichokes safely and effectively
Artichoke can be a good friend of the liver if used properly:
Drink 2-3 times a week, without completely replacing the filtered water.
Prioritize fresh artichokes, do not use floating concentrated extract products.
Do not use continuously for more than 2 weeks without a prescription from a medical professional.
People with a history of gallbladder inflammation, yellow bloating, and chronic digestive disorders should consult a doctor before using.
