What is fish oil?
Fish oil is a widely used dietary supplement, made from the tissue of certain types of fatty fish such as mackerel, sardines, salmon, rainbow trout and herring.
This supplement contains high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In 100 grams of fish oil there are 22.5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids. These omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential because our bodies cannot make them on their own and must be obtained through our diet.
Benefits of fish oil for hair
According to a study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in 2018, fermented fish oil extract from mackerel containing DHA can promote hair growth. In addition, regular use of fish oil can also help solve dry skin and acne.
Fish oil can support hair growth mainly through the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in the cycle below:
- Omega-3 fatty acids help improve blood circulation to the scalp. Increased blood flow delivers more nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles, helping to support the growth of strong, healthy hair.
- Omega-3 has anti-inflammatory properties, helping to soothe and reduce inflammation in the scalp, while creating a healthier environment for hair growth.
- Omega-3 contributes to maintaining a healthy scalp by nourishing it well and keeping it free from problems such as dandruff or excessive dryness.
To strengthen your hair, try using fish oil in the following ways
Consume foods rich in omega-3
If you don't want to take fish oil supplements, you can eat a diet rich in omega-3s. Add fish to your meals every day, especially fatty fish such as mackerel, salmon, tuna and sardines, which are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids. To supplement your body with a sufficient dose of omega-3 fatty acids, try to eat at least 2 meals of fatty fish per week.
Fish oil supplements
If your diet does not provide enough omega-3 fatty acids, you can consult your doctor and take a fish oil supplement. The two main types of omega-3 found in fish oil, EPA and DHA, should be included in a high-quality supplement. Follow the dosage instructions on the product label.
Use directly
If you are shy about eating fish or taking fish oil supplements, you can use liquid fish oil and massage it into your scalp in gentle circular motions. Leave for 30 - 60 minutes then wash your hair. Note: try applying fish oil to a small area of skin to see if you are allergic and make sure to wash your hair after applying it directly because fish oil has a strong and unpleasant odor for many people.
