According to the Department of Disease Prevention (Ministry of Health), from March 31, 2025, a number of foreign electronic information sites reported on the recording of cases of unknown cause in humans in the Russian Federation. Initially, the patient showed symptoms such as fatigue, pain, and weakness as common seasonal diseases. However, after a few days (3-4 days), symptoms of high fever (39 degrees Celsius) appeared, coughing so much that he had tears and phlegm mixed with blood, fatigue and bedriddenness. Many patients tested negative for COVID-19 and flu. The new pathogens in these patients have not been determined.
After receiving the above information, the Department of Disease Prevention contacted the World Health Organization (WHO) in Vietnam to verify and clarify the information. Up to now, initial information from the WHO International Health Regulations (IHR) Implementation Agency in the European region has determined that some cases of the disease have been caused by Mycoplasma infection.
WHO is contacting a health agency in the Russian Federation for further clarification. Mycoplasma bacteria cause respiratory infections that damage the respiratory lining (including the entire throat, tracheum and lungs); the disease is transmitted from person to person through small drip secretions containing bacteria caused by coughing, sneezing; the disease can be treated with antibiotics.
The disease prevention department will continue to closely follow the epidemic situation; Closely coordinate with WHO, Unit to implement IHR of the Russian Federation to update information and proactively provide, share information fully accurately, not to occur bewildered, worried but at the same time not subjective, neglected before the development of the disease situation, especially in the current season of seasonal conditions with favorable weather conditions for pathogens through the infectious respiratory tract.
