Dr Sonali Kohli, Consultant Physician at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai (India) - said that the change in weather can cause cold, runny nose and cough in most people. If you constantly blow your nose, it can lead to a number of health problems, including:
Increased pressure in the nasal cavity and ears
Blowing your nose forcefully or frequently can increase the pressure in your nasal cavity and ears. This can cause problems such as: broken blood vessels in your nose, blocked or painful ears.
When applied consistently, strong pressure can affect the middle ear, causing a feeling of blockage or pain. If this pressure is too great, it can lead to a condition called otitis media.
Sinus infection and inflammation
Blowing your nose forcefully can push mucus and bacteria from your nose into your sinuses, increasing your risk of developing sinus problems (sinusitis). This can cause headaches, a stuffy feeling in your nose, and worsen the symptoms of rhinitis or sinusitis.
Nasal mucosa irritation
Blowing your nose too often can irritate and dry out the lining of your nose. Damaging the lining can leave it vulnerable to inflammation, bleeding, or infection.
According to Dr. Sonali Kohli, we often don't realize that the skin under our nose can become significantly irritated by these symptoms. This allergic reaction can be even more damaging to the skin under your nose when you frequently try to blow your nose.
Allergies can cause inflammation of the nasal passages, causing people to instinctively rub their noses to relieve the pain, causing tension in the skin. Over time, the skin loses elasticity, and constant rubbing can aggravate the formation of wrinkles.
The formation of these wrinkles can make the skin on your nose extremely irritated and sensitive and will cause visible lines to appear.
Blow your nose properly to avoid harm
Blow your nose gently: Blow your nose slowly and gently so as not to put too much pressure on your nasal cavity and ears.
One nostril at a time: When blowing your nose, blow only one nostril at a time instead of blowing both nostrils at the same time. This helps reduce pressure and avoid injuring your nose.
Use saline solution: If your nose is stuffy or dry, you can use a saline solution to rinse your nose before blowing. This helps soften mucus and reduce congestion.
Always have a tissue ready: Instead of rubbing, wipe gently, blotting with a soft tissue.
Topical creams: Using topical creams or skin lighteners can help reduce wrinkles.
