Dak Lak - On the morning of November 23, in Hoa Thinh commune, the scene of devastation after the historic flood was still clearly visible on every house; people awkwardly woke up after the flood, waiting for relief.

The fates of people in the fierce flood

Hoa Thinh commune, the place that suffered the most damage in the recent flood days.

Along the road leading to the commune, vehicles lined up in a long line, carrying necessities to supply the people.

Local authorities mobilized people and vehicles to repair landslides, creating conditions for support forces to approach isolated villages.

In the house that still smells of mud, Mr. Vo The Nga (born in 1960) was both cleaning and choking up when recalling the moment floodwaters raided the house at night.

"The water rose so quickly that my family couldn't react. In just a moment, the water touched the roof, sweeping away all of the property. Rice and other items were submerged, now my family is left empty-handed," he said.

The family also suffered heavy losses due to storms and floods, Mr. Pham Quang Thin (born in 1987) said that after 12 years of living here, there has been a flood every year but it has never been as serious as this time.

"The water flooded into the house very quickly, increasing by 30cm per hour. A moment later, it exceeded 2 meters.

Luckily, my family had a second floor so the whole family could take shelter. But many houses opposite completely sank.

The damage was about 200 million VND, but we were still lucky to keep our network. As for people, everything is gone, Mr. Thin shared.

In addition to the loss of property, people are seriously lacking in necessities.

30 people died, dozens of households are still isolated

Mr. Ta Tan Cong - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Thinh commune - said that the level of damage in the locality was "very serious".

Especially in Phu Huu village, 7 people died and about 50 households are still completely isolated.

Mr. Cong said: With a family, both old couples stayed behind to raise the herd of cows, and could not run away from the flood, so they were submerged in water. Some people broke their legs while running away from the flood, could not get up the stairs, and died from hunger and cold.

For many days, the commune was in darkness due to a power outage, and the phone could not be contacted.

When the water receded, the commune government sent forces to each village to count the damage and support people to temporarily stabilize. However, many documents and machinery at the commune headquarters were severely damaged by prolonged flooding.

We could not have expected the water to rise so quickly, an officer shared while cleaning the office.

At the headquarters of the Commune Party Committee and People's Council, relief vehicles continuously enter and exit. Outside are volunteer groups bringing clothes, drinking water, and food; inside the commune, cadres classify and arrange to bring to the severely affected villages.

Mr. Le Trung Hien - Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hoa Thinh Commune Party Committee - said that the locality is making statistics on property damage, there are no official figures. But regarding deaths, by the afternoon of November 22, there were 25 cases reported.

The commune has opened a warehouse to receive necessities from benefactors inside and outside the province. Tonight, the force continues to survey to identify households in need of emergency assistance.

Despite being shocked after the flood, Hoa Thinh residents are still trying to move their houses and gradually restore their lives.

All over the villages, piles of mud were scattered, and furniture was blocked all over the paths. The smell of mold and thunder mixes with the afternoon wind, but it is mixed with urgency and determination.

The commune government said that in the coming days, the urgent task is to ensure food, clean water and temporary accommodation for households that suffered heavy damage.

While waiting for further support, many people are still shocked, but they believe that just needing timely support, Hoa Thinh will soon rise from the loss.
