LD25062: After more than 10 years of fighting cancer, the couple is exhausted but still hopeful

Khanh Hoa - Assets are gone, health is exhausted, but Ms. Thuy is still determined to save her life after so many losses due to fighting cancer.

During the days of prolonged heavy rain in Khanh Hoa, in the small house where Ms. Vu Thanh Thuy and her husband are living with relatives, they have trampled on all sides. Buckets and pots are placed everywhere to collect water, making the already cramped space even poorer.

Welcoming guests in a patchwork house, Ms. Thuy could not hide her sadness when talking about her journey of more than ten years fighting the disease - a journey that has eroded both the health and assets of this small family.

Graduated in 2004, she worked as a warehouse worker at a plastic company in Nha Trang. After getting married, in July 2014, she became pregnant with her first child, but her joy was not yet complete when the fetus was held back.

Before she could cope with the loss of her first motherhood, in January 2015, she was shocked to learn that she had stage 1 breast cancer. From here, the family life turned to a stormy path.

From 2015 to 2022, she had to undergo 5 breast cancer surgeries. The others were in 2015, two in 2018, 2021 and the rest in 2022. She did not stop there, she also suffered a minor stroke in 2022.

The physical pain has not stopped, but the mental pain continues to pile up. Ms. Thuy continued to have labor in 2018 and in 2023, had to have her two ovaries removed, completely cutting off her motherhood.

The prolonged battle of illness has caused all of the assets of the couple to be exhausted for more than 20 years, leaving behind after the treatment. She is currently transferred to Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital for internal medicine treatment and the initial treatment regimen has shown good signs.

However, the treatment was too expensive, forcing her to reduce the dose from 3 boxes to 1 box per month. In the past two months, the family has not been able to borrow money to buy medicine for maintenance.

Meanwhile, the only source of income is her husband's packaged staff salary - too small to cover all living and treatment costs.

Mr. Pham Truyen, Head of Cu Thanh village - Suoi Hiep commune, said that Ms. Thuy's family situation is currently very difficult. The couple sold all their house and had to stay with relatives. However, they always rely on each other to get through each disease.

"The village has supported within its capacity, but resources are limited. I hope the community and benefactors will join hands to help Ms. Thuy continue her treatment, Mr. Truyen shared.

Currently, Ms. Thuy really needs support so as not to be interrupted in the treatment journey that she has been enduring for more than ten years.

"Although the road is still difficult, I still try every day, hoping to find a valuable opportunity to continue fighting and regain my life," Ms. Thuy sadly expressed.
