LD25087: 33-year-old father calls for help in the midst of the journey to fight lung cancer

HƯƠNG NHA |

The man discovered terminal lung cancer at the age of just 33, dragging his entire poor family into a deadlock after nearly 2 years of running out of money for treatment.

A warm and peaceful life

The life of Mr. Nguyen Van Huy (born in 1991, residing in Phu Hai 3 village, Tang Loong commune, Lao Cai province) and his wife and 2 children is simple but peaceful.

He works as a worker, his income is just enough to cover his living expenses, while his wife sells vegetables in the market, and works hard to take care of his two children, one in grade 4 and one in grade 6.

Thinking that the peaceful days would last long, a small needle on his neck and his body losing weight unusually in March 2024 has turned his family's life upside down and deadlocked.

After many examinations, the results surprised the whole family, Mr. Huy had terminal lung cancer. The bad news came when he was just over 30 years old, his child was still young, and the couple struggled to build an economy.

Despite the decline, the family still did not give up. For the first year, Mr. Huy was treated at Tan Trieu Hospital K, Hanoi. Each drug delivery cycle costs about 65 70 million VND, not including testing, drugs on the list, travel to Lao Cai - Hanoi and living expenses.

At the age of working but having to undergo continuous treatment, he was no longer able to work, all the burden was on his wife who was a small trader with an unstable income. Both families also contributed all their efforts, but that cost was far beyond the means of a poor working family in the mountainous areas.

For nearly 2 years, the couple has lived in hospitals more than at home. The two young children were taken care of by their grandmother and sister-in-law. The children could not understand why their father was hospitalized all the time, why mother was always in a hurry, why the family was lacking laughter.

"I just want to live a little more"

By mid-2025, the condition had progressed slowly, and the cost of treatment was too high, causing the family to exhaust. On April 17, 2025, after many nights of discussion, Mr. Huy and his wife decided to transfer to the Oncology Center - Thai Nguyen Central Hospital for treatment, hoping to be closer to home and save some costs.

But no matter where he is, this money is still a burden on the young wife's shoulders. Taking care of her husband's treatment and her two children of school age, she had to borrow money from everywhere.

The brothers and sisters have tried to help for the past 2 years, but everyone has their own families. Old parents in the countryside are no longer healthy, only relying on a few sao of rice fields, unable to help much. Currently, the family is almost completely exhausted.

During his weak days, Mr. Huy always tries to keep his spirit. Every time the doctor announced the results, whether good or bad, he was silent, just staring at his wife and the two children through the phone screen. "I just hope to get more treatment, live a little longer... to take care of my wife and children" - he said in a heavy breath.

Relatives who are familiar with the situation and often text to ask about the difficulties the family is going through all understand: Treatment fees, children's education fees, food expenses, travel expenses, and sudden check-ups. The cost of treatment alone for 2 years has exceeded 700 million VND, far beyond the support of a poor family.

Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong - Head of Phu Hai 3 village, Tang Loong commune, Lao Cai province said that Mr. Huy's family is currently a poor household in the village.

"After hearing the news that Mr. Huy was seriously ill, the local authorities and the villagers visited and encouraged him. We hope that benefactors can join hands to help his family" - Mr. Cuong expressed.
