Dak Lak - In the midst of Tuy An Dong flood center, grief engulfed the small house of a young couple. In just the moment the flood swept away their two children.

The moment of life and death when the flood swept away two young children

On November 24, a working delegation of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front led by Mr. Nguyen Thai Hoc - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Fatherland Front and Central Organizations - visited and encouraged people in flood-prone areas in Tuy An Dong commune.

Among them, the family situation of Mr. Nguyen Duy Thanh and Ms. Le Thi Tra My made many people feel sorry.

They work as workers in Ho Chi Minh City, leaving their two young children - one in grade 7 and one in grade 1 - to their grandparents and maternal grandparents to look after in their hometown of Phu Thinh village.

On the afternoon of November 19, floodwaters suddenly rose rapidly. The family was forced to evacuate urgently by boat.

"At that time, the water was too high, relatives took the two children first, and their grandparents followed. While moving, the boat unfortunately overturned, causing the two children to die in the rushing water, said Ms. Le Thi Kim Quang, her grandmother, choking up as she recounted.

Two days later, on the afternoon of November 21, the bodies of the two children were found about 500m from their house, lying about 1m close to each other, in bamboo bushes on the water bank.

"After receiving the news, the authorities in the commune focused on searching for the two children. Finally, the children's location is right near the family relocation area, not far away," said Ms. Le Thi Thu Ha - Ms. Dang Thi Hong Nga - Secretary of Tuy An Dong Commune Party Committee.

Hearing the bad news, Mr. Thanh and his wife immediately returned from Ho Chi Minh City. In the house filled with tears, Ms. Tra My spread a small blanket next to her child's altar, her eyes swollen from crying for many days.

Every time someone asked her out, she didn't say anything, just burst into tears. Her parents - who are old - had to try to take care of the children's smoke.

Outside the porch, Mrs. Dang Thi Hong Nga was still tormented by the moment she could not save her two young children in time.

"The water rose too quickly, even though we used canoes, moving was extremely difficult," Ms. Nga confided.

After that, the authorities tried to search but the large water caused the work to last nearly 48 hours.

"Up to now, many people are still regretful because they could not save the two children...", Ms. Nga shared.

Timely sharing amid great loss

When hearing the family story, Mr. Nguyen Thai Hoc expressed his emotion and shared the great pain of loss that Mr. Thanh and Ms. My are suffering.

"I also have two children, so I understand the boundless attachment and love of parents. This pain is too great for the family... Mr. Hoc said, at the same time encouraging the family to overcome the loss soon, maintain health and stabilize their lives.

In that tragic family, no one could hold back their tears when the working group came to share.

Ms. Dang Thi Hong Nga - Secretary of Tuy An Dong Commune Party Committee said that the presence of Central officials at this time not only has material value but is more important, a source of spiritual encouragement for the family to rise up after the huge incident.

Along with the villagers, the local government is supporting the funeral arrangements for the two young grandchildren, while helping the family stabilize their place to live and continue their lives.

Many people in the village expressed that they have never witnessed such a great pain in loss in many years.

In common grief, timely sharing from the community, the Front organization and the rescue forces has become a fulcrum for people in flooded areas to overcome difficulties more firmly.
