Ms. Nguyen Thi Canh, 73 years old (Thuong Phuc commune, Hanoi City) almost no longer sees the light. Without husband, without children, she fights illness alone.
The place called Mrs. Canh's "house" is located separately outside the field, belonging to Gia Khanh village, Thuong Phuc commune. The house was temporarily built many years ago, surrounded by old corrugated iron on all sides, now seriously degraded. Surrounding it are empty fields, sparse people's houses. During the day it is deserted, when night falls, this place is almost immersed in silence.

Ms. Canh (born in 1953) has never been married, has no children. Her parents died more than 40 years ago, from then on she was accustomed to a self-sufficient life. When she was young, she quietly clung to the fields, doing whatever she was hired to earn a living, supporting herself in poverty.
Previously, she used to live with relatives. However, over time, the grandchildren in the house grew up, got married separately, and each person had to take care of their own lives. Not wanting to become a burden, she quietly moved out to live separately in the old house in the fields.
The incident happened about three months ago, a severe illness caused Ms. Canh's health to collapse quickly. After the illness, Ms. Canh's eyes gradually blurred and she could no longer see anything. "At first, I thought it was because I was too tired and my eyes were blurred, but unexpectedly it became more and more dark. Now I don't dare to step out of the house," Ms. Canh shared.
Old age leads to illness, making Ms. Canh's life even more difficult. Currently, she suffers from many chronic diseases such as bone and joint pain, heart disease and diabetes. Frequent pains make her tired, health is depleted, especially since her eyes were blurred, all daily activities have become more difficult. Due to lack of a stable income, she almost does not dare to go to the hospital for examination. “When the disease gets worse, I only know to ask neighbors to help buy some medicine to take for a while, hoping to get through the pain. Every time I go to the hospital and spend millions of dong, I can't bear it," Ms. Canh said sadly.
Currently, Ms. Canh is no longer able to work. She is also not eligible for social assistance, has no stable income. Ms. Canh only relies on a little food, a meager amount of money occasionally supported by relatives and family... Daily meals are mainly rice with vegetable water, sometimes just cooking a thin bowl of porridge to eat through meals. "Now I don't see anything, I can't even do it if I want to," Ms. Canh choked up.
Since Mrs. Canh's eyes gradually sank into the darkness, the person who regularly came to help her was Mrs. Nguyen Thi Vu - a neighbor living nearby. Every time she was free, Mrs. Vu would come to cook for her, clean the house, and support Mrs. Canh in daily life. That support partly helped the old and weak woman become less lonely in the deserted field.

She lives alone, and is blind, so she is very miserable. I occasionally run over whenever I have free time, if there is anything to help, I can help within my ability, I love Mrs. Canh very much...", Ms. Vu shared.
Old age, weakness, and loss of vision, Mrs. Canh's life is facing countless difficulties. No one to rely on for a long time, no stable source of income, every day that passes is a difficult day for her...
Talking to Lao Dong reporters, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Head of Gia Khanh village, Thuong Phuc commune said that Ms. Nguyen Thi Canh is one of the cases of elderly people living alone, losing vision, so she faces many difficulties. The whole village is concerned and understands.
Localities and people have paid attention and supported in the best possible conditions, but for Ms. Canh to stabilize her long-term life, more cooperation from the community is still needed," Mr. Tuan said.
