What is yellow spot degenerative disease?
Aging yellow spot degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease that directly affects central and regional vision, helping people read, drive, and recognize faces. Although AMD does not cause complete blindness, if it progresses severely, it will seriously reduce the ability to function daily.
There are currently nearly 20 million adults in the US with AMD at different levels. The disease often develops silently, and genetics are also an important risk factor.
AMD comes in two types:
AMD is dry: overwhelming, slow-moving, often starting with a blurred or blurred vision at the center.
AMD wet: rare but dangerous, due to abnormal blood vessels developing under the retina causing leakage or bleeding, creating black spots in vision.
Typical symptoms include:
officeuses or distorted vision
The straight road looks rough
appeared dark areas or spaces in the visual center
Solutions to protect and maintain eyesight
The most important thing to detect AMD early is to have regular eye check-ups and follow the follow-up schedule, says Dr. Yu Hyon Kim, an ophthalmologist at Montefiore Health System (New York, USA).
Regular eye check-ups include retina checks, which can detect damage before symptoms appear. The American Academy of Dental Medicine recommends:
From 40 - 54 years old: examination every 2 - 4 years
From 55 - 64 years old: examination 1 - 3 times a year
From 65 years old and above: examination 1 - 2 times a year
For dry AMD, there is no cure, but research shows that the formula for AREDS (vitamin C, E, lutein, zinc, copper, zeaxanthin) can slow the progression of the disease. Your doctor may also recommend vision support devices such as sunglasses, satellite glasses or enhanced reality glasses.
For wet AMD, the most effective method is to inject VEGF antipods into the eyes. The drug helps inhibit the development of abnormal blood vessels, thereby maintaining stable vision. This process is usually painless, only a temporary feeling of dry eyes.
In addition, lifestyle changes also play a supporting role:
Quit smoking, maintain a diet rich in green vegetables and fatty fish
Control blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes
Use sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays
Macular degeneration cannot be completely prevented, but early diagnosis, regular eye examination and proper treatment will help patients maintain vision, minimizing the impact on their lives.
