At least four people have died in a major traffic collision on the expressway between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Petersburg, Russia on January 8 - RT reported, quoting Novgorod Region traffic police chief Viktor Gavrilov, writing on social media.
"The consequences of the traffic accident killed 4 people, including a young woman and a one-year-old child. 11 people were injured, Gavrilov said in a statement on the evening of January 8.
The clip posted on social media shows many cars and pickup trucks piled up on the snow-filled road.
According to Novgorod Governor Andrey Nikitin, there were about 50 vehicles that collided in a row in the accident.
Officials said that local law enforcement agencies are working with emergency services to clear the road and support the victims.
A rescue helicopter has been deployed to evacuate the injured. Buses and mobile heating devices were also sent to the scene of the accident, along with food and hot drinks.
Traffic along the route to Moscow was suspended for several hours. An alternative route has been opened so that un damaged light vehicles can turn around and leave the congested area. More than 60 heavy trucks stuck on the highway are unable to turn around.
Officials have warned that heavy snowfall will continue this week after New Year's Day.
