The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that Typhoon Ba Vi, a large-scale and very strong typhoon, will approach Sakishima Islands in Okinawa Prefecture around July 11, which may cause strong gusts of wind, heavy rain and widespread thunderstorms.
People here have been called upon to increase maximum vigilance against strong winds, high waves, storm surges and landslides.
According to JMA, at 6 am on July 10 (local time), Typhoon Ba Vi - storm number 9 of this year's typhoon season - was operating in the sea area south of Okinawa and moving north-northwest at a speed of about 20 km/h.
Wind speeds have begun to strengthen across this prefecture, with maximum wind speeds recorded in Naha city (Okinawa prefecture) being 77 km/h.
It is forecast that the storm will approach the Sakishima archipelago on July 11 but still maintain very strong intensity. Strong winds may be strong enough to blow off roofs or collapse some houses. The maximum wind speed is forecast to reach 180 km/h on July 10 and increase to about 216 km/h on July 11.
Sea areas around Okinawa Prefecture and the Amami area of Kagoshima Prefecture are forecast to have high waves, while coastal areas are at risk of flooding due to rising water and high waves.
The meteorological agency recommends that people quickly move to solid structures or safe shelters before heavy rain and strong winds increase.
