The Disaster Management and Relief Agency of Uttar Pradesh state said that 89 people were killed after a violent storm accompanied by heavy rain and hail swept through India's most populous state.
According to a notice from the state relief agency posted on social network X, unfavorable weather conditions on May 13 killed 89 people.
Authorities also recorded 53 injuries, 87 houses damaged and 114 livestock deaths due to storms, heavy rain, hail and lightning strikes.
Television images show that many green trees and billboards were knocked down by strong winds. Some fell on cars while dust and debris swept across the streets, damaging many roadside stalls.
A state relief official told Reuters that some victims died from fallen trees and collapsed walls.
Major storms often appear in Uttar Pradesh state during the hot season from March to June, before the monsoon season begins.
The government said that the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh state has directed functional agencies to support survivors and distribute financial aid within 24 hours. The state is currently run by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party.
