Typhoon Gaenari formed off the coast of Japan, bringing the number of tropical cyclones named in the Northwest Pacific this year to 20.

On August 22 (local time), according to new weather news from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a tropical depression north of the Miyako Islands has strengthened into tropical storm Gaenari.

According to JMA, as of 11:00 AM on August 22, Typhoon Gaenari had maximum winds of 65km/h and atmospheric pressure at the center of 998hPa.

Gaenari is the 20th tropical cyclone to be named in the Northwest Pacific region in 2026, and also the 7th storm to be named in August.

As of August 22, the Northwest Pacific has recorded 20 named storms. This is a rare number, as since 1951, this area has only reached the milestone of 20 storms 3 times at this time of year.

With this figure, 2026 currently ranks second in the number of named storms as of the same time.

The name Gaenari was proposed by South Korea and taken from the name of a native flower of this country, also known as the Korean Golden Bell Tree.

Gaenari appeared in the context that the Northwest Pacific region is recording many tropical systems operating at the same time. Previously, Typhoon Saudel also developed strongly and is forecast to continue moving over the Northwest Pacific region.

According to information from weather monitoring sources, Gaenari was formed from a low pressure area north of the Miyako Islands. There is currently no information in the initial source showing that this system will directly affect Vietnam.

With Gaenari becoming the 20th named storm of the year, the 2026 storm season in the Northwest Pacific continues to record a high number of tropical systems compared to previous years.

Information on the intensity and developments of Typhoon Gaenari will continue to be monitored and updated in the following news bulletins.
