On February 5, the Royal Thai Army said it had received information from Military Region 2 that at about 10:20 am on the same day (local time), a 40mm grenade was found to have fallen in the area near a Thai combat base in Kantharalak district, Si Sa Ket province. The incident did not cause casualties.
After the incident, the Thai side said that the forces were ready to take measures to handle the situation and act in accordance with regulations on the use of force.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Thai Army said it had contacted Cambodian commanders in the area to inform them about the incident and was explained that the incident stemmed from a new unit deployed in the area violating discipline. The military personnel involved have been reminded and rectified.
On the contrary, Cambodian Ministry of National Defense spokeswoman Maly Socheata denied information that the country's forces fired 40mm grenades near a Thai military base, and said that posting this information was "an attempt to create tension along the border".
We completely reject the above information. We affirm that this is fabricated fake news, completely contrary to the truth, aimed at misleading public opinion and creating tension along the Cambodia-Thailand border" - Ms. Socheata said.
According to Ms. Socheata, the 4th Military Region of Cambodia confirmed that their coordination team had contacted partners in the 2nd Military Region of Thailand to verify information. The two sides both confirmed that the situation reported by Thai media did not actually occur.
The Cambodian Ministry of National Defense spokesman emphasized that Cambodia remains committed to implementing the Joint Statement dated December 27 of the 3rd Special Conference of the Cambodia - Thailand Joint Border Committee (GBC), as well as the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement.
These agreements include clauses aimed at combating fake news, creating conditions for the rapid restoration of normal status, peace, stability and long-term security along the border.
