According to Reuters, Mohammad Abu Itiwi - one of the Hamas commanders involved in the disastrous attack on Israel on July 10, 2023 - was killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on October 24, 2024.
The IDF said Itiwi joined the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in 2022 and worked as a driver. The Israeli military also accused UNRWA of having many Hamas members.
The Israeli military has asked senior UN officials to hold an urgent investigation into UNRWA personnel.
UNWRA also confirmed Itiwi's death on October 24. Although it did not acknowledge Itiwi as a member of Hamas, UNWRA said Itiwi's name was on a list of 100 people suspected of being members of Hamas sent to the agency by Israel in July.
Ms. Juliette Touma - UNWRA Communications Director spoke out after receiving the list of allegations that all suspicions were considered seriously by UNWRA and called on Israel to provide more information for joint action.
During a personnel review in August, UNWRA found nine members involved in the attack on Israel on October 7 last year and fired them immediately.
UNRWA was established by the United Nations in 1949 to provide services such as health, education and humanitarian aid to millions of people in areas of the Middle East, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
However, relations between Israel and UNRWA have always been tense and have deteriorated since the war in the Gaza Strip broke out, and Israel has called for UNRWA to be dissolved.
