According to AP, Israel fired artillery shells into southern Lebanon on October 11, injuring two members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The United Nations said a series of explosions took place near an observation post at UNIFIL’s headquarters in the town of Naqoura (Lebanon). One of the two wounded soldiers was hospitalized in the nearby city of Tyre, while the other was treated by medical staff at the scene.
The cause of the attack is not yet clear, but Israel said its military considers any armed person operating in southern Lebanon - where the ground campaign is taking place - a threat and must be eliminated.
UNIFIL, which has about 10,000 peacekeepers from dozens of countries, was set up by the United Nations to oversee Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon after its 1978 invasion.
Also on October 11, an Israeli airstrike also affected many people who were not Hezbollah - the target of Israel, including 2 Lebanese army soldiers killed and 3 others injured.
The Lebanese army is not involved in the war between Israel and Hezbollah, with many Lebanese soldiers ordered to withdraw about 5km from observation posts along the border since Israel launched its ground operation in early October.
Earlier, Israel was accused of injuring UN personnel in a tank attack on the UNIFIL observation post on October 10. The two injured were both Indonesian nationals.
Many countries including France, Indonesia, Italy, Canada,... have strongly criticized Israel after these attacks and expressed concern that many unrelated parties are caught up in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
