The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that on May 19, the Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang attended the 34th session of the Criminal Prevention and Criminal Justice Committee (CCPCJ34) in Vienna, Austria.
The focus of the session is the event of the United Nations ratifying the Convention against Cybercrime (Hanoi Convention) - the first document of the United Nations on crime prevention in more than 20 years, establishing an international legal framework to promote cooperation in preventing cybercrime.
Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang informed the Conference on the efforts of the Government of Vietnam in perfecting the framework of the criminal judicial law, strengthening the international cooperation on crime prevention, including the Vietnamese initiative to host the opening ceremony of the Hanoi Convention, which is a testament to Vietnam's commitment as a positive member of the international community.
The Deputy Minister also officially announced the date of the opening ceremony of the Convention in Hanoi on October 25-26, 2025, expected to be co-chaired by Politburo member and President Luong Cuong and Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres. Through the highest foreign channels, Vietnam is forwarding President Luong Cuong's Invitation to all heads of state of United Nations member states to Hanoi to attend the signing ceremony.
Detailed information about the signing ceremony was introduced at the "Road to Hanoi" Seminar on the afternoon of May 19 with more than 200 delegates attending in person and online. The seminar was organized by Vietnam in coordination with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UNODC Director General Ghada Fathi Waly, to ensure the scale and historical significance of the event.
Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang emphasized that the Opening Ceremony is not only a signing event, but also spreads the message of strengthening international cooperation in this field.
UNODC General Director Ghada Fathi Waly is committed to supporting Vietnam in the organization of the signing ceremony, expressing the belief that this will be a successful event, making a mark for the 80th anniversary of the United Nations establishment on October 24. Representatives of Africa (Algeria), Asia (Japan) also stated the role of the Convention on the region and emphasized supporting Vietnam as the host country of the opening ceremony.
Also within the framework of the Conference, the delegation had a private meeting with UNODC General Director to discuss the preparation for the signing ceremony as well as the initiatives to promote Vietnam - UNODC cooperation in crime prevention. The delegation also met and exchanged with the delegation of some countries who actively participated in the negotiation process of the Convention such as Russia, Algeria, Thailand, Saint Kitts & Nevis, awarded the invitation of the President to the head of state of the countries, and discussed the plan to organize events in Hanoi next October.
On this occasion, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang had a working session with General Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi on cooperation in the field of civil nuclear power.
