On the evening of August 8 (local time), the Central Executive Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the National Assembly, the Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and the Central Committee of the Lao National Construction Front sadly announced that Lao National Assembly Chairman Xaysomphone Phomvihane had passed away at the age of 70, after a period of fighting against severe vascular disease.
The special announcement published by Pasaxon newspaper and KPL news agency emphasized that Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane is one of the key leaders of the Party Central Committee, a person with intelligence, capacity, sensitivity, and rich experience through his time as a leader in localities as well as many ministries and branches; a leader with many outstanding contributions, who dedicated his intelligence and energy throughout his life to the revolutionary cause, for the development of the country and the prosperous and happy life of the people of Lao ethnic groups; and the permanent departure of the comrade is an extremely great loss for the Party, State and people of Lao ethnic groups.
To recognize the contributions of National Assembly Chairman Xaysomphone Phomvihane and express the deepest condolences, the Central Executive Committee of the Revolutionary People's Party of Laos and the Government of Laos agreed to organize 5 days of national mourning, from August 9-13.
